Overview

The Glorious Revolution was a revolution due to King James II being overthrown by his religion. This caused some wars for the next 10 years, called the Glorious Revolution, or also known as the Bloodless Revolution. There are many causes that came along with this revolution.

  • King james II tried to claim his throne back and spent years hiding

  • He was overthrown by his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange and from 1680-1690 there were some battles fought

King James II had a son, which is good news for the royal family. However, when King James II had his son, he was going to raise him as a Christian in a nation lead by Protestants. After ruling for 3 years he was overthrown and went to hide in France. He seeked for refuge with his friend Louis XIV. Later on, he attempted to reclaim his throne back in 1690 with the help of the Irish army.

Through 1680-1690 there were a few battles fought. During the time of this battle, John Locke, a famous philosopher during this time, wrote a book named A letter concerning toleration. Here he talks about the role of Christians during that time. He talks about freedom and addresses what was happening in Europe during the year 1689.

“The toleration of those that differ from others in matters of religion is so agreeable to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to the genuine reason of mankind, that it seems monstrous for men to be so blind as not to perceive the necessity and advantage of it in so clear a light.” John Locke wrote this book, to address the situation during the time of the Glorious Revolution. In this quote he is telling the reader about the role of Christians during this time. He is saying that the difference of religions during that time is fine to God, but mankind just find it so bad that people don't agree with their religion.

In conclusion, the Glorious Revolution was a time of disagreement amongst people. With the overthrown of King James II, and the fact that he wanted to raise his son Christian under a Protestant ruled country, created a lot of disagreement.
